For 177 years, the Bangor Debating & Political Society has provided a place for students to question ideas, challenge assumptions and make their voices heard. Founded in 1849, the Society predates Bangor University itself and is recognised as the oldest student society in Wales.

Today, we are Bangor's home for politics, debating and public speaking. Our debates range from current affairs and political questions to philosophy, ethics and popular culture - meaning there is always something to debate, whether you are deeply involved in politics or simply curious to hear what other people think. 

What happens at the Society?

• Weekly debates on politics, current affairs, philosophy, ethics, culture and more. Change minds, develop your own ideas and learn how to argue your point of view more effectively.
• Politics-focused events offering space for deeper discussion beyond the weekly motion.
• British Parliamentary debating for students interested in developing competitive debating skills and taking part in national and international competitions on behalf of Bangor. We'll give you the tools you need, including training from experts, to become the best debater you can be.
• Guest speakers and special events designed to bring important conversations to Bangor. From Members of Parliament to nationally significant figures, we want to bring new perspectives and important voices to our campus.

A Society with a long history — and a future to build

From its beginnings in 1849, through generations of university debating, to the Society you see today, our purpose remains remarkably simple: to create a space where people can think, speak and challenge.

We are proud of our history, but we are not here simply to preserve it. We want Bangor to be a place where difficult questions can be asked, important issues can be discussed and students can develop the confidence to make their voices heard.
