Manifesto: Hi, my name is Neve Curran, I am currently a 3rd year in marine biology and oceanography, and I am running to be your next VP of sport.
I have been on the committee for the Mountaineering society (BUMS) for 2 years now as social sec, secretary and now as captain. Balancing studies, sport, and committee responsibilities has been my life, and I understand the time and dedication it takes to make a club thrive.
My athletic ‘career’ started before coming to Bangor. I started synchronised swimming at the age of 6, I eventually went on to be part of the youth Swiss national team age 13. Sadly I had to quit at 14 due to an injury. Instead, I started swimming competitively.
Growing up in Switzerland also meant being surrounded by mountains and lakes and all the amazing sports that can only be done in the outdoors, I spent every spare moment hiking, skiing, paddleboarding, and trail running.
As VP of sport, I want to encourage people to connect with the incredible natural surroundings of Bangor. I want to encourage people to make the most of the sea, mountains and lakes of North Wales.
I intend to highlight the outdoor sports clubs and provide them with support on running trips and risk assessments associated with being high risk clubs.
But I am not just here for the mountain sports club I want to support every sport from rugby to swimming. I want to encourage every athlete whether they compete nationally to those who move for their mental health.
As VP of Sport, I intend to encourage committees to work together and provide opportunities to learn new skills that they can pass on to their clubs. I want to organise workshops on injury prevention with local physios. As well as opportunities to learn about sports nutrition and how to write a good risk assessment. Equally I hope to make the transition to club fees as smooth and fair as possible.
I look forwards to working closely with the SU, committees and athletes.
