Keeping MFL and other courses in the university

Thank you for your petition about the proposed changes at Bangor University. Weโre making sure your feedback is passed on to the University, and weโre also encouraging every student to have their say through the Universityโs official feedback form on the Business Cases for Change here - this is your chance to have your voices heard during the consultation period, which is open until 13th June.
We've met with members of the University executive on this and have some clarity on these points which may help. They have told us:
- All students will be able to graduate from Bangor University with the degree they are currently studying. No student will need to change course or university to graduate.
- There are no changes currently proposed to Biology, Ocean Sciences, or English Literature.
- No departments or schools are being removed from the University.
The financial situation at the University is serious, and changes are being proposed to keep things running in the long term. We know this is worrying, and weโre pushing hard to make sure any decisions put students first and cause as little disruption as possible.
Weโll also be holding online focus groups in May open to all students. This feedback will shape our formal response to the University โ details coming soon.

The university is currently holding a discussion between 14th May 2025 - 13th June 2025, where decisions made will be implemented in August 2025
The university is considering the removal or extreme condensing of departments, one being the MFL courses by condensing it to contain only French and Spanish, removing Italian, German and Mandarin. Furthermore, there are potential staff cuts still for MFL lecturers.
The "languages for all" scheme will also be considered to be removed, taking away the opportunity for all students in the university to learn a new language.
Other courses/departments/modules that will be apart of this discussion are Geography, Politics, History, Biology/Veterinary Science, Biotechnology, Ocean Sciences, English Literature and more.
If this discussion concludes with the change or removal of these departments/schemes/modules, this will effect current students and their futures, new applicants for 2025, staff and more.

I was right to wait before applying for further study. Guess I'm going somewhere else
As someone whoโs degree is either being cut or merged with another I am shocked at the universityโs lack of competence. I have received no emails or clarification about why my degree is no longer showing up on the Bangor university website. I canโt even pick my modules for next year. There was no warning, no discussion, nothing.
awful behaviour from the university, almost no contact with the students during the process.
The lack of support and compassion from the university during this time is shocking and disappointing. These degrees are valued and important, yet are being scrapped and funding cut. This is a very scary time being a univeristy student here during this time and the least they could do is inform us personally what is going on. Shame on them
Canโt believe what I am reading. Truly disgusting that they would even consider doing this as well as the lack of consideration for the students already studying this course and those languages who will suffer the consequences. Language learning is needed more than ever and cutting the course or parts of it will go against this whole aspect.
I would be very interested in seeing the full consultation document to fully understand the rationale behind these decisions. As the parent of a student who is currently on her year studying in China, I'm very concerned that she may have no option to complete her final year having already applied for student finance and sorted accommodation. I would hope the university has the common sense, if the decision to cut these courses is agreed by the management, to apply this to NEW course applications, not those already part way through their courses. This also takes away the opportunity for students to have a year studying abroad which is invaluable for their learning of languages and life experiences.
this is incredibly disappointing and sad to read. languages are needed now more than ever and are so important to promote understanding and cultural awareness. Bangor University is supposed to be a renowned languages hub so why is languages the subject taking the blow? This is unfair to both staff and students who have been given very little warning on something that could be detrimental for career prospects and future opportunities
I dont understand how we are getting rid of such beautiful languages - the amount of work modern language students put in is unbelievable - all of our hard work is practically going to waste
